What I Am Reading

Currently, Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray.

Why?

Because I had run across several references to Becky Sharp, and I didn’t get them. One was in I Capture the Castle, and I believe the most recent was in an episode of Doctor Who.

I’ve always been one of those people who, if I don’t understand something, I go look it up. It used to be running to the dictionary or encyclopedia, now it’s off to Google, but the principle is the same. My parents and teachers were always insisting I look up answers to my own questions, and the habit has stuck.

While I agree with looking up our own answers- Google has replaced Encyclopaedia Britannica in my geek love life- I wouldn’t waste your time on Vanity Fair over a single reference. Vanity Fair is still the worst story to which I have ever been subjected. It has no plot at all.

There’s worse. I can deal with no plot more than pre-Victorian American literature.

You *know* it’s going to be bad when your teacher hands you a book and apologizes. “Guys, I’m sorry, but the school board says you have to read this. Don’t blame me.”

    The Scarlet Letter. *shudders*

      *has awful flashbacks*

I hated it. The really weird part was that The Scarlet Letter came up in a few of my college courses as we were discussing the impact of “wilderness” on the American mind. I was an Environmental Studies major, so this makes sense.
